Taking The Time To Look Into The Past
What does your work area look like? Is it a den or study setup? Maybe it is in your bedroom. There may be several things that you wish to improve about it. Your computer workstation desk may leave a lot to be desired. Your computer may need a new operating system or upgrade. Maybe you could use a new chair, too. There are ways to improve your area. This will not be expensive. It does not require much work, either.
Walk into your room and close your eyes. Let the years fade away. Travel back in time 100 years. It may take a few moments. Finally, open your eyes and examine the room. Keep in mind that it is one hundred years earlier.
Gaze at your work area. Is there a pad and pencil there? You might have one of those fancy inventions called a typewriter. However, most people cannot afford them. Check the time. You will not see any digital clocks. Items like men’s watches are much different. You have to wind them up, each day. There may be a calendar on your wall. You will not see anything that is electric. Most people cannot afford that either.
If you are a writer, you will be writing your work in longhand. When you make a mistake, you have to scratch it out, or start over. There is no spell check. There are no word processing programs. There is little contact with the outside world. If you live in an urban setting, you can depend on neighbors and newspapers. There is no TV or radio. Unless you are well off, you do not have a phonograph.
You can smoke if you wish. It is not considered a health hazard these days. If you do, be careful. Do not spill your ashtray on your paper pad. The cordless handheld vacuum has not been invented yet. You will have to clean up the old fashion way. Get a brush and a trash container.
If it is summertime, you may be quite uncomfortable. There is no air conditioning. There are no electric fans. You will wear light colored clothing as a necessity, not out of fashion. Work at your desk in the early morning hours. It is cooler. You could work at night, but it may be hard to see. You will need candles or oil lamps.
Summary
Does your work area at home seem outdated? You may wish that you had an upgrade. Maybe you should think about certain downgrades. Go back 100 years and take a look at your room. The room of the present may not look so bad.
