Roundup of Hidden Spy Cameras

Spy cameras – nothing new here Hidden cameras have been around for years and have slowly made it from the upper echelons of the security services down to ordinary consumers like you and me. This roundup will give you a taste of what’s available right now.

Kicking off our list is the calculator spycam. It’s essentially a desktop calculator with a very small video camera embedded in its side. It also works as a desktop calculator making the disguise complete. Look for a camera that records at least 25 FPS (frames per second) at 320×240. These will be able to record in multiple video, audio and photo formats including MP3, AVI, and MPEG4.

Next up are surveillance camera watches. These wrist watches have been inspired by spy movies like James Bond. Chic looking, with the camera lens embedded in the face of the watch. One such watch, for example, has the lens neatly hidden in one of the numbers. While the video quality may not be as good as in a larger spycam, it is amazing what you can get for less than $200.

Another very spy movie-like device is spy cam sunglasses. Look for those that can take both video and photos. Find a pair that takes at least 1.3 Megapixel shots. You should be able to find a pair for under $200.

If you need to take images or video from afar or above ground, then get an RC spy plane. Perfect for reconnaissance! The best part is that most folks don’t think spy plane when they see/hear a RC aircraft up in the sky.

If you would rather keep things on terra firma, then there are lots of options for RC cars and trucks with spycams. You could even attach your own camera to an RC toy. There are even models that will transmit live video to a remote screen or headset.

Perhaps you have children and have babysitters or nannies take care of your kids periodically. A desktop calculator may not cut it as it won’t fit in in a child’s bedroom or the living room. Look around for toys that also have cameras embedded in them. Some of these will even record and transmit live video (like a webcam). Some can even be viewed over the Internet. You can then view that from any computer with a Web browser.

You can see a nice roundup of specific examples of these embedded spycam devices at this popular electronics reviews blog.
