Outdoor Furniture For The Environment

There are many options today for sustainable and environmentally friendly outdoor furniture, and it’s great wether you worry about the carbon footprint you are leaving on Earth or not. Many long time manufacturers are jumping on the eco-bandwagon with the many new ones who are designing outdoor furniture.

Teak has a long history for being expensive and popular for making outdoor furniture. It weathers beautifully, and lasts for years. Unfortunately, Southeast Asia’s major teak forests are all but gone from over harvesting. There are companies who are doing something about it. One company, who headquarters in Costa Rica, is manufacturing furniture from sustainably forests. They give a portion of their profits back toward reforestation. This doesn’t mean that the price of teak pieces are going down, but it does mean that having a table and chairs isn’t helping to wreck the ecosystem.  Several outdoor furniture manufacturers have joined an organization called 1% For The Planet. It’s a way for corporations to join together and openly donate 1% of their sales to more global eco-conservation. Most of their websites all display the organization’s logo, and you’ll notice it when shopping.

Other companies are designing chairs, tables and other outdoor items that are made with recycled plastics. These new designs are nothing like the plastic ones found at all the big discount stores.  They are highly stylized and comfortable additions to the market. Remember how stunned people were to find out that polar fleece was made from recycled plastic, and that’s how these designs will be seen! Plastic pieces don’t have to be taken indoors during the winter months and that’s a great bonus. The tables and chairs are all low maintenance and continue to look great season after season. Consider recycled wrought iron which looks great and is very stylish too. You’ll find hammocks made of recycled soda bottles and contemporary chairs made up of old staves from wine barrels. You’ll find it just as comfortable as the old rope style ones.

Stay on the lookout for recycled rubber products, and the use of polywood. More durable and prettier than plywood, polywood is actually much like it in composition. The environment will hopefully be improved on some levels by the diligence and efforts of manufacturing companies who care. Todays’ more environmentally furniture will surprise you with its style and durability for your decorating. Rustic and hand hewn products are now being left in the dust!
