Many also have drawers that will accommodate hanging files which would be handy for keeping your records. If yours does not, visit an office supply store. You will find many home office storage options such as filing cabinets or boxes that you can store items or hang files in.

A big part of your day will be spent in your office, so add your personal touch to the room. If you like to have a radio or music playing the background while you are working, add a radio or CD player to your office. Put a picture or two on your desk or hang a painting to give your office a comfortable feeling.

You will also need plenty of lighting. If you need a lamp on your desk and don’t have one around the house that isn’t being used, visit your local retail or home improvement store. You will find not only lighting options, put other home decor accents that you could use in your office to give it a personal feel.

Noisy children or barking dogs can also be distracting not only to you, but to your client or boss that may be on the other end of the telephone.

Set some ground rules with your family. Make it clear that when you are working, you are not to be disturbed unless it is an emergency. Ideally, your office space will have a door that you can close when you are working to shut out distractions.
