Like It Or Not, You Are An Interior Designer
Whenever you get dressed in the morning, the clothes you choose to wear say something about your personality. Many people deny this and say that they just throw on any old thing and don’t care what it looks like. This says something about them, doesn’t it? The same thing applies to interior design. You can’t get around it: your home’s decor reflects who you are.
Even if you live in a crowded home with your whole family, you are still putting your own individual mark on your interior surroundings. Take that little nicknack on the shelf. Was it something you picked up at the beach that looked interesting or was it something you had to save for, but just loved. Either way, by placing home decor accents in prominent places, you became an interior designer!
In the traditional American home, the stay-at-home wife was the principle home decorator. It was she who chose the colors for the walls, the furniture, the carpets, etc. When baby cam along, it was she who chose the designer baby bedding and everything else for the baby. The husband joked that he was just the guy who paid the bills and didn’t have anything to do with the decorating.
That was true to a certain extent, but it didn’t tell the whole story. There is no question that if the wife painted their baby son’s room pink and gave him pink designer crib bedding, the husband’s inner interior designer would rebel! His quarterback son wasn’t going to live in a girl’s room!
What’s the point of all this? Just this: you are an interior designer, whether you know it or like it or not. Why not make the best of this inescapable truth and let your home’s interior reflect the things you like the best about yourself?
Hopefully, you are already enough of a decorator to clean up after yourself! Next time you’re cleaning up the room, why not move some things around or change them altogether. Have a good look around and see what still means something to you and what’s just there because you no longer notice it. Change those old photos on the wall or shift them to another place. Just doing little things like that can make for a refreshing change.
Your home, however humble or grand, should be a place of comfort and inspiration to you. If it is, it can help you on your life’s journey in immeasurable ways. Don’t think that you’re not an interior designer or that it doesn’t matter. It does, in more ways than you may know!
